Thanks for your reply.

$ uname -a
FreeBSD t103.ipv6.psu.edu 5.1-RELEASE FreeBSD 5.1-RELEASE #1: Wed Jan 28
14:46:36 EST 2004 fwu at t103.ipv6.psu.edu:/usr/src/sys/i386/compile/GENERIC
i386

As you can see, the OS is Freebad5.1 with ntp 4.2.0. At the very beginning, it
is a fresh installed machine(only OS and no other applications) running with
simple ntp.conf( only a couple server and peer). Then I killed ntpd, and edited
the ntp.conf, adding authentication part. I tried to start ntpd with the
updated ntp.conf, then it reported this problem.

I find that I can walk around this problem and get ntpd started by mark away the
authentication part of ntp.conf, however, I need this authentication.
Furthermoe, this authentication configuration works very well in other
machines. The authentication part attached as following:

keys /etc/ntp.keys
trustedkey 300 301 302 303 304 305 306 307 308 309 310 311 312 313 314 315 316
317 318 319 320 321 322 323 324 325 326 327 328 329 330 15
requestkey 15
controlkey 15

Thanks

Fei
