Thanks. FWIW I symlink'd the system's serial port to the HP 58503A device:

ln -s /dev/cuad0 /dev/hpgps0

so it shows up like this:

lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  10 Sep  7 08:58 /dev/hpgps0 -> /dev/cuad0
