You can always check if ntpd is running by using "px -ax | grep ntpd" ..

Sounds strange. Do you use the "ntpq -p" command directly on this 
machine? If yes, there is probably a problem with your local network 
interface. Can you try to run "ping 127.0.0.1" on that machine?
