Yes, Uwe, I have the pps-tools, and I can see the transitions.
I also had a similar problem to that reported on Peter's blog. That was
fixed by using:
$ dpkg-reconfigure gps
although I coudl have edited the file: /etc/default/gpsd to change the
line: GPSD_OPTIONS="" to GPSD_OPTIONS="-n".
