The Solaris issue looks pretty strange. look into syslog (/var/adm/messages)
to see how PARSE is initialized in the clock setup messages.

The passed up HANGUP/UNHANGUP messages lead to an error state in to streamhead.
So many error messages are caused by that (I/O error and such). I am
not too sure whether the sudriver patch does the right thing there. Usually
CLOCAL should make the driver agnostic to MODEM events while PPS should
still work. I would expect we would need CLOCAL here for PPS handling.

Unfortunatly the Solaris 8 manuals say nothing about interaction between
PPS handling and CARRIER handling. What happens when you run with CLOCAL enabled ?

As for the delays/timeouts I would suspect, that CARRIER handling is
the cause for this. ntpd gets stuck in read/write syscalls due to
hangups/unhangups.
