I chatted more with Bruce and he mentions:

- disable the signed/unsigned warnings - they are not worth fixing
- if st[r]rchr() or [r]index() is not available we'll need to supply
  our own
- compat/compat.h will also need:

 #ifdef SUCCEEDED
 # undef SUCCEEDED
 # undef FAILED
 #endif
