John,
I think I misread both your email and the ntptrace perl code.
The old C code cannot work with IPv6 while the new perl code can
because the old code used the refid to get the upstream address and the
new code uses 'pstat' and reads the srcadr.
Therefore, I believe this bug report is probably INVALID, as in order to
get the upstream connection we need to be able to issue ntpq queries
against the remote chain of machines, and they may decide to disallow
these queries.
If this is true, I'm open to knowing how we could implement ntptrace in
some other way.
Unless somebody can show a way to implement ntptrace for both IPv4 and IPv6
(and it would be Good to have a maintainer for ntptrace), I'm going to
mark this bug as INVALID.
