i think the proper fix here would be to use the AC_USE_SYSTEM_EXTENSIONS macro
in the configure.ac file, although that requires newer autoconf versions i think
(newer than the current required 2.53)

if that's the case, then you could use AC_GNU_SOURCE instead ...
