First see if it will display the current tick length (which should be 1,000,000
divided by your HZ as I understand it):

$ tickadj

If that reports a single number, that should be the length of your tick in
microseconds.  Try adjusting it slightly by subtracting or adding one, for
example, assuming tickadj reported 10000:

$ sudo tickadj 9999

If that does not complain of failure, verify:

$ tickadj
