With what little I know, let me try and explain.
There is a parameter called "minpoll" that you need to set for every
time provider that you configure. This parameter ranges from 4-16. The
default value is 6. This defines how often the time consumer will poll
the time provider. 5 successful polls with take the clock to
synchronized state. The duration between each poll is 2 power 6 = 64
seconds. Hence every 64 seconds the time consumer will poll the time
provider. And in 64*5 = 320 seconds, you will synchronize. If you want
to synchronize faster, you should run ntpdate with the same time
provider before you run xntpd and also in the ntp.conf file reduce the
minpoll value ot 4, Eg : "server <IP Address> minpoll 4".

how much time it would take to completely synchronize(with minimum
error) two machines connected together one simple ethernet
cable(directly connected) running ntp in client-server mode????? and how
much would be error after completel synchronization, 5 to 6 ms or lesser
or greater????
