Whilst with my own software I use a three digit code for the "released"
versions, but as you're only talking about a new version every six months
it would seem that a two-digit code might be enough.

Do I understand you to mean that 4.2.0 would be the "released" version,
that 4.2.1, 4.2.2, 4.2.3 would be development versions, and that 4.3.0
would be the next released (stable) version?

I think that the only problem with this would be the edits required to go
from 4.2.xx to 4.3.0 - all just before a "released" version. You could
perhaps use 4.3.rc0, I suppose.

As I write this, I think I'm missing the whole point!
