[ntp:hackers] Dlink is abusing almost *ALL* stratum 1 servers :-(

Poul-Henning
Why because their product Marketing and Engineering people never considered
what the load of their adding their appliances did to us as a Group of Time
Server Operators? My feeling is that this line of public-push back is the
fastest way to get NTP taken away from this group and an official sanctioned
Government Managed time services infrastructure in place - meaning all of
us - well most of us, are out.

If you would rather have a pound of flesh than payment for the services, I
think you would find that when you tried to get it, that the Courts would
tell you that "you know that people connect regularly to these servers in
violation of the AUP and yet there is no evidence of the Operator's
objecting to that" and so if you object to D-Link's unauthorized use, no
matter how they packaged it, whether in firmware, or otherwise, that you
would have to prosecute all unauthorized use or that otherwise, this was
harassment on your part for their legitimate use of your system.

The Trust is the obvious answer and can fix the problem. DLink, Netgear,
Cisco and others would be approached as building products that regularly
used these services, most without approval or authorization per their AUP's
and so if the Trust has a specific AUP and the vendors subscribe to this,
when your network gets too heavily loaded the trust would buy you another
server.

What more do you want? Bandwidth? OK the trust can cover that too. The point
is that this can totally subsidize NTP and its operations, development, and
roll-out. This ***IS*** the golden carrot NTP needed. Dont throw it away by
demanding a public execution here please because that demand is what they
will use to paint us as unreasonable.
