It seems quite handy for debugging/poking-around to have the old
IPv4 addresses printed out as host names.

I assume that was done at the ntpq end.  Perhaps the string
sent from ntpd could be stretched to include a tag character
that would help that decoding.  4 for IPv4, T for text, ...
