	Regretfully, he's on a closed network that has been in feature 
freeze for many years -- Digital Unix 4.0d is pretty damn old.  So, 
he can't upgrade the software.  Unfortunately, he's also told that he 
can't afford to upgrade the hardware.

	I fear that the OP is just plain screwed.  But, I don't know 
enough about the ancient code he's using to be able to definitively 
make that determination.
