Machine check should never be the result of software problems (except
kernel ones which leave the hardware in a diagnostic mode).  It means
you have a broken CPU, memory, or other core part of the hardware.

All zeroes status isn't very helpful.  Normally this would give a clue as to
which part of the hardware is failing.  That might indicate a kernel bug in 
the machine check handling code.

You need to forget about porting ntpd until you have a machine that is working
reliably.
