As another datum for you, rebuilding the kernel on FreeBSD 5.4 on a 133MHz 
Pentium with 48MB of memory took "several hours".  I think I left it 
running overnight.  No other rebuilding was required - the supplied NTP 
worked with a GPS/PPS source once configured.
