There would be something wrong with the network design.  That's the 
equivalent of 4 class A sub-nets, when IP addresses are supposed to be 
in short supply.

Although overloading an interface is a useful feature in modern IP 
implementations, I doubt that it was ever envisaged as providing so many 
aliases.
