It is nice, but it should be sufficient to check the status messages of
any GPS receiver that provides PPS (that just continues when sync is lost).

One possible bug in a driver (that one would have to test) that I can
think of: when somehow the messages are no longer sent or received, it
could be that the driver remembers the status in the last received
message and does not invalidate it because nothing is received anymore.

But that should be easy to test and cure if it fails (add a timer).
