Did you somehow know whether the existing 500+ ppm drift is stable?

Yes, it's best to solve the underlying problem.  Lost interrupts, a flaky XO,
operating system bugs, etc are all possible.  Some of these might be easy to
fix though, ie, by choosing a different system clock source...
