If you had a "pure client" installation you couldn't even send an 
"ntpdate" request to that machine just to check the time offsets.

And, is all the "ntpq" stuff where ntpd is connected from outside and 
replies to queries "client" stuff or "server" stuff which would be 
omitted in a pure client installation?

In the latter case, how would you check the state of the "client" ntpd?

If the client still replied to "ntpq" queries, would you disable the 
possibility to let the "client" ntpd reply to queries for the current time?
