(Are you accessing via USENET, or via mailinglist? The latter's run by
MailMan and if I'm not very much mistaken, there's a pertinent setting
in your configs there.)

Try "ntpdate -d $SERVER" and "ntpdate -u $SERVER" as well. We had
someone's client-side firewall block NTP requests with privileged source
ports (<1024) lately, the telltale symptom being that *those* variants
suddenly worked. :-/
