Checking the return value of 'more_pkt()' is not always useful, but it must be
checked whenever a reponse is built up incrementally in loops or alike. There
where indeed several checks missing.

There was also a 32/64 bit clash that would cause a bug when compiled for a
64bit big-endian machine.

This also fixes the recursion depth problem of Bug 2940 by replacing recursion
with iteration and a scratch pad.
