[ntp:hackers] FreeBSD 6.0

Guys,

I have upgraded two of my backroom munchkins to FreeBSD 6.0 with
conflicting results. As part of this process I replaced the hard disks
with larger ones. Munchkin howland works just fine, even if it has
tummyaches about ssh. I built and installed latest NTP with no problems.
Munchkin mort has some interesting differences. First, ntpq from
shrinkwrap comes up wanting libreadline.so.5 and fails. Installing
latest NTP fixes that. Second, tickadj comes up wanting libmd.so.2 and
fails. I have no workaround for that. Third, the kernel frequency is off
by 0.5 s per 64-s poll interval (!). The tickadj on howland does display
the expected results, but changing the tick value has no effect. For
somebody installing the default version, this would be a clear violation
of the Principle of Least Astonishment.

Earlier, Harlan upgraded munchkins beauregard and mort to 5.4 with no
problems, although ssh did have some wrinkles. However, there was a
monstrous /usr/local which represented overrides of the stock
components, including /libexec/ld-elf.so.1. I attempted to upgrade that
and got a flash that lit up the entire neighborhood and I had to repair
from CD. Tells you how little I know.

Dave
