The log files usually get rotated every week or month or ??? to save space.
man logrotate or logrotate.conf

Your /var/log/messages may have a log-rotated message telling you when it was 
last rotated.

Try "service ntp restart" to restart your ntpd.  (Debian and Ubuntu call it 
ntp.  Fedora calls it ntpd.)
That will generate some syslog traffic.  On my RPi, it goes into 
/var/log/syslog
