When I'm wearing my tech writer hat, I avoid the phrases '12:00 a.m.' and
'12:00 p.m.' like the plague, because the probability that the reader will
misunderstand them is way too high. So it's '12:00 noon' or '12:00 mdnt' for me.
Like 'billion' (10**9 or 10**12?), they can be a source of confusion, and our
job is to spread unconfusion.
