Thanks to Danny & Dave for their help....
It seems to be a problem with DNS lookup (possibly only on XP!) - if I
specify an NTP server by IP address everything works fine (using
4.2.0), if I specify either uk.pool.ntp.org or a hostname then the
servers are duplicated in the ntpq output (and I also get 'runt
response received 0 bytes' messages in the system log). What is
curious is that NO dns lookup packets go out on the wire so it seems
to be an issue even with cached names. I tried turning off the XP
DNS client service (as suggested) with no effect. Using 4.1.80-rc1
the symptoms seemed to be different in that the servers seemed to
'stick' in INIT mode or go into 'STEP' mode and not come out again!
I couldn't run ntpd in debug mode as it came back with 'no -DDEBUG
option specified' - I am using the precooked NT versions from Terje's
web site...
