Since a source RPM is source plus vendor patches (including distro-specific 
boot scripts) plus build instructions, you already have the equivalent of 
the upstream tarball, at least at the time the source RPM was made. Source 
RPM's are easy enough to customize. Unpack one, edit the spec file (the 
build instructions) to change the configure options, and repackage.

The latest upstream tarball should be available in the SRPM in the Fedora 
Development ("Rawhide") repository. It should repackage just fine on RH9.
