You've discovered it (or try "ntpq -c v localhost"); what you may be missing is the influence of your $PATH:

# /usr/sbin/ntpd --version
ntpd - NTP daemon program - Ver. 4.2.4p5

# /usr/local/bin/ntpd --version
ntpd - NTP daemon program - Ver. 4.2.6p2
