IP=Internet Protocol
IP address-- That is the number (4 bytes long under the old
version IP4 and 16 bytes long under the new IP6) that "uniquely"
identifies your computer on the internet so packets of data can be sent
to you. (uniquely is in quotes, because that is not quite true. There is
a range of addresses which is not unique, but any data to or from those
addresses has to go though a uniquely identified machine if goes on the
geenral network. Those non-unique adresses sart with 10. or 192.168 or
172.16.x.x (well actually all of these have to be multiples of 16 in the
second address space). for any of these there can be thousands or
computers in the world with the same address, but they cannot talk to
each other or machines not on their particualr network except through
another machine.)
